for the past two weeks i have had the incredible opportunity to work with three african community leaders – pfiriael kiwia from tanzania, nonkosi mteto from south africa, and rose mokitimi from lesotho – as designer and facilitator of the stephen lewis foundation arts academy, using the sorplusi method as an arts-activism tool, with naomi abiola. on monday june 2nd we feature our culminating presentation of the process at the new alliance francais theatre at 24 spadina just north of bloor at 6:30pm. Internationally acclaimed dubpoet, mono-dramatist, and educator d’bi.young anitafrika having recently completed her global travels, has returned to the Toronto stage to launch her world renown SANKOFA TRILOGY on DVD. The launch event is a 3 Plays in 3 Days affair featuring a live performance of each of her tour-de-force monodramas per night from June 16-June 18, 2014 Aki Theatre in Daniels Spectrum. She will be joined by veteran musician-composers Amina Alfred and Waleed Abdulhamid.

THE TWO-TIME DORA AWARD WINNING SANKOFA TRILOGY features three extraordinary monodramas of three generations of powerful Jamaican womben – Mudgu Sankofa, Sekesu Sankofa, Benu Sankofa – and their resolute belief in blood and truth.

BLOOD.CLAAT is about mudgu’s coming of age at fifteen years old.

BENU is about sekesu’s motherlessness and motherhood.

WORD! SOUND! POWAH! is about the rebirth of dubpoetry and r/evolution in jamaica.

d’bi.young anitafrika is an internationally celebrated afrikan-jamaican-canadian dubpoet, monodramatist, educator and mother whose trans-disciplinary works of art, have made an indelible mark upon the canadian and global cultural landscape. she is currently preparing a remount of her award-winning ‘sankofa trilogy’ at the aki studio theatre. her storytelling and mentorship have taken her to africa, the caribbean, south asia, north america, europe and the united nations, where she has shared her passion for equality and integrity with all whom she meets. d’bi. is the published author of eight plays, two collections of poetry, six dubpoetry albums, and is anthologized in numerous

publications worldwide. she is the recipient of the canadian poet of honor accolade, two dora mavor moore awards, the km hunter theatre award, the arts council award, the harold award, the women’s resiliency award and the best spoken word artist award. d’bi. is the artistic director of YEMOYA intl artist residency, the director of the artist shaman project, and the program designer and facilitator of the arts, activism and AIDS academy – a recent project of the stephen lewis foundation, based on her sorplusi method. her latest offering is an adaptation of Word! Sound! Powah! into a 15 member-cast dub-o-pera featuring the R.I.S.E Movement.
